UPPER ‘walking class heroes’ meet in Lisbon for #WALK21

In an age dominated by rapid technological advancements, urbanization, and ever-increasing mobility options, the simple act of walking remains one of the most profound forms of liberation we can engage in. Walking is not merely a means of transportation; it is an act of freedom that transcends the physical realm and touches the very essence of our autonomy and individuality.

Unlike cars, buses, or trains that can isolate us and dictate our journeys, walking (and cycling) empowers us to choose our paths, make detours, and find joy in spontaneity. This inherent spontaneity is essential in reclaiming our freedom in an often chaotic world, offering a chance to discover new landscapes, cultures, and even ourselves.

Project partner Mario Alves of the International Federation of Pedestrians will be speaking at the 24th Walk21 Foundation Conference on Walking and Liveable Communities hosted by the Institute of Mobility and Transport on behalf of the Government of the Portuguese Republic in partnership with the City of Lisbon.

Together with experts from across Europe and around the globe, this in-person-only event will share insights and expertise on how to develop and implement walking policies and programs that deliver walkable communities and safer streets, broader community participation, and enhance the value of walking.

'Public transport is the backbone of urban mobility, and walking is the essential "glue" that makes public transport systems both effective and efficient.' Mario Alves

UPPER will be represented in two sessions:

  • WorkshopWalking Advocacy Worldwide: Where are we and how can we move forward?
  • Breakout Session: "A next-generation sidewalk scanner: a tool for improving the quality and accessibility of our sidewalks"
