Santa came early this year in Lisbon

Last week our twinning city Lisbon through project partners CARRIS and the City of Lisbon welcomed the arrival of 44 new fully-electric buses to significantly boost the city's commitment to a zero-emission fleet.

Thirty new standard-size buses and 14 electric minibusses will be operated by Carris by the end of the year, reinforcing the use of "zero-emission" vehicles on eight routes, announced the public transport company of Lisbon. In a note, Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa (Carris) informed that it "quadruples the fleet of electric buses, with the entry into operation of 30 new standard buses and 14 minibusses".

The company explained that this is "a global investment of 16 million euros" - 12 million euros for the acquisition of 30 standard buses and 4 million euros for the 14 minibuses -, with financing secured through community support, specifically, through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP)/ Environmental Fund and the POSEUR program (Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources).

"This will provide a significant boost to our commitment to a zero-emission fleet, as with these 44 new vehicles, we have quadrupled the fleet of electric buses," said Pedro de Brito Bogas, chairman of the board of directors of Carris, quoted in the note, highlighting the importance of this new offering. "This is a path we have been following for some time now and will continue to be committed to, in the name of sustainable mobility for Lisbon, with clear environmental benefits and for the thousands of people who travel with Carris daily," he added. The new fleet will reinforce two regular service routes, which will now be operated with buses standard electric buses - 732, between Caselas and Hospital de Santa Maria (stopping on Rua da Madalena), and 760, from Ajuda to Gomes Freire (stopping on Rua da Madalena). The reinforcement will also include the only regular service route that has been operated, since 2020, with "standard" electric buses: 706, from Cais do Sodré to Santa Apolónia.

This investment is part of Lisbon's measures of LIS_2 and LIS_10 within UPPER as one of the 100 Climate-neutral Cities.
